haiku: one birthday two souls

2007 November 6

My dad and I share the same birthday, which is November 6th. Quite a milestone, my dad turns 80 today.

Thanks, Dad, for holding my hand through the journey. Here are a few haiku in honor of you.

************************

One birthday two souls

twenty-four years between us

daddy and daughter.

************************

“Benny” and “Bonnie”

written on the cake for two–

how many candles?

************************

calvary-temple.jpg

Sunday morn and night,

Wednesday night off to church

spring, summer, fall snow.

*************************

mirror.jpg

Trucks, gardens, cars, tools:

strong hands work hard with purpose

ways to show his love.

*************************

heart-light.jpg

He works with his hands

Jesus’ face shines on his heart

I see Light in him.

**************************

Shoulders slump with care:

May heart in December frame,

he’s eighty today.

***************************

sunset-joy.jpg

Eighty years’ milestone

God’s grace shines brightly and shows,

there’s joy in sunset.

****************************

Happy birthday dad

thanks for love, patience, and grace

thanks dad, just plain thanks!

****************************

Here’s a little hope:

yesterday is full reward,

the best yet will be.

****************************

shadows.jpg

My father’s shadow

lengthens across the years of

what was, is, will be.

****************************

What I want for my

birthday? Days of quiet peace,

nothing but the sea.

***************************

    Ugh, I’m crying. Your
tender words put to shame this
    cold heartless blogger.

I lost my father just about two years ago, right after the holidays. I am so glad you two have each other and continue to enjoy your birthdays together. You have made my day with your beautiful record of your special shared day.

    Gimble,

Thanks for your birthday sentiment and kind words. I am sorry for your loss. Parents cannot be replaced; I pray love and memories will fill the gap.

Your blog is totally inspiring. You are a very gifted writer. I enjoyed many of your posts and will visit often.

In fact, you inspired me to start writing haiku again. I haven’t written since high school; although, I keep the poetical muscles flexed. But haiku is so spare, so concentrated, so on target.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

    Bonnie,
Your Dad and I just looked at your birthday blog. What a wonderful tribute to your wonderful Father. We so enjoyed reading it. Once again we are so proud of your God given writing ability. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for the long telephone conversation we had yesterday with all of you. Made our day.

May you have many more great years to honor God.
